About
Alex Lane is a Canadian sound artist and musician from Halifax, Nova Scotia, based in Montreal. Primarily inhabiting the world of documentary and experimental cinema, Alex’s work has shown in festivals including; Berlinale, IFFR, Visions du Réel, Hot Docs, IDFA and Cinéma du Réel.
With nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards and Cinema Eye Honors, as well as wins including the Sacem Prize at Cinéma du Réel and the Prix Iris for Sound in a Documentary, his work has garnered international recognition.
Alex’s approach to sound is holistic, often accompanying films through the entirety of the auditory process; he views recording, design, and mixing as a unified creative discipline. His sensibility ranges from subtle natural realism to abrasive dissonance, often blurring the lines between music and sound, with a fixation on how sound subconsciously transports us from the concrete to the abstract.
